When Jen finds a pile of wheat kernels in the barnyard, she can't wait to grow wheat and make Grandma's delicious bread. Getting to the finished product is more than a one-hen job, so Jen is happy to have help from a cast of familiar nursery rhyme and fairy-tale characters.

Since no one fully completes their tasks, Jen ends up doing most of the work. When she injures herself on baking day, she is able to reap what she sows, and friendship and cooperation save the day (and the bread).
