As a young boy in Budapest, Hungary, Andrew Fuchs spends his days playing with his friends, getting into mischief and enjoying time with his parents and older sister. But at eight years old, Andrew sees his carefree childhood vanish when Germany occupies Hungary. After his parents are taken away for forced labor, Andrew is passed between children's homes before waiting out the Siege of Budapest in a building protected by the Red Cross. With the war's end comes the devastating news that he is an orphan, yet he strives to hold on to his mischievous spirit as he rebuilds his life.

Author Biography

Andrew (Endre) Fuchs was born in March 1936 in Budapest, Hungary. He escaped during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, finding refuge in Austria and Switzerland before immigrating to Canada in 1958. Andrew now lives in Montreal, where he has been a volunteer for many years.

Catherine Aubé is a French editor with the Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program (Montreal, Canada). She earned a master's degree in translation studies from Concordia University (Montreal) and in her work as an editor, has developed a keen interest in studying the various linguistic layers found within historical testimonies.

Emily Standfield is an assistant editor with the Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program in Toronto, Canada. She holds an MA in global governance and a graduate certificate in publishing and editing from Centennial College. Her academic and editorial focus has been on human rights, conflict resolution and public memory.
