May 1, 2010 will forever be etched in law enforcement history as the beginning of the most notorious serial killer case in Long Island, New York's history. While searching for sex worker, Shannan Gilbert, in the areas of Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach, the police discovered 10 bodies off Ocean Parkway in the Town of Babylon.
The Long Island Serial Killer case (LISK) was initially thwarted by Suffolk County's corrupt law enforcement administration under the auspices of former chief of police James Burke, former district attorney Thomas Spota, and former corruption bureau chief Christopher McPartland, all of whom have served prison time for their offenses.
With the new regime headed by District Attorney Ray Tierney, the LISK investigation received new life with the formation of the Suffolk County Gilgo Beach Homicide Investigation Task Force, whose sole task is to concentrate on finding the murderer(s) of all the victims. As a result, alleged suspect Rex Heuermann was arrested on July 13, 2023 for the murders of four women. Subsequently, Heuermann has been charged with three more murders, totaling seven to date.
