Brighten the Corners arrived in 1997 as Pavement's most approachable record, the moment when Stephen Malkmus's oblique lyricism and the band's ramshackle charm met something closer to genuine pop craft. Recorded with producer Mitch Easter, it captures a band that had already influenced a generation of indie rock acts finding a looser, more expansive groove without losing any of the weird.
