Approximately 85% of all instances of lung cancer are classified as non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The reason it is called "non-small-cell" lung cancer is that, when examined under a microscope, the cancer cells are bigger than small-cell lung cancer cells. A family history of lung cancer, exposure to secondhand smoke, and environmental contaminants like radon and asbestos are other risk factors.
