Fueled partially by Nazi Germany's financing of propaganda, thousands of New Yorkers embraced the ideals of an American Reich through retreats such as Yaphank's Camp Siegfried, which groomed Nazi sympathizers to be ready for the fascist overthrow of the American republic. In opposition to Nazism, multiple local citizen groups fought to combat the Bund's organized efforts to undermine America. Author Biography

Christopher Verga is an instructor of Long Island History and Foundations of American History at Suffolk Community College. He is a contributor to Fire Island News and the online local news sites Greater Babylon, Greater Bay Shore and Greater Patchogue. His published works include Civil Rights Movement on Long Island (Images of America), Bay Shore (Images of America), Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses, World War II Long Island: The Home Front in Nassau and Suffolk, Cold War Long Island and Ferguson Brother Lynching on Long Island: A Civil Rights Catalyst. Christopher has a doctorate in education from St. John's University.
