There wasn't much Jessie couldn't do. However, when her Mama becomes sick, there is something Jessie can't do. She can't afford to buy the medicine that is needed to keep her mother alive. Jessie already had a reputation. What could more stories do to harm? Especially if those stories helped her save her mother's life. Even if it meant that she became the most feared woman in the Mallee.
