The various stones, tablets, and traditions, still remaining serve to revive much of Maryland's primitive social life. Had it not been for the vandalism of some and the ignorance of others, much more might be found to supply missing links in county records, or to fill the gaps in carelessly kept parish registers....Isolated stones have been found in fields, by the roadside and beneath dwellings, also in use as doorsteps or as flagstones with the inscriptions turned under."
