The protagonist is an experienced, if young, cowgirl who simply wants a healthy, strong, well-trained horse. When a wrangler offers to sell her Desert Rose, she believes it's the horse she's been looking for, and at a surprisingly reasonable price. She takes the time to inspect the horse carefully and thoroughly, even checking its response to common triggers for bad behaviour. The horse shows itself to be extraordinarily calm and well-mannered. Satisfied, the cowgirl strikes a deal with the wrangler and saddles up her new horse for the ride home.

What follows is something many horse owners and riders know well; the challenge of just staying in the saddle!
