Bertie County native Arwin D. Smallwood is professor and chair of history at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a Road Scholar for the North Carolina Humanities Council, and has participated in the award-winning UNC-TV film documentary titled The Birth of A Colony: North Carolina. With a scholar's skill and a native's insight, Dr. Smallwood, whose previous works were well received in the academic community, establishes with this new volume his merit as a popular historian.
