Staged photographs address the social constructions that define how people relate to each other

The bilingual publication Archipelago focuses on the contradictions of human relationships across countries, generations, and genders. Yolanda del Amo explores how our longing for closeness coexists with our desire for individuality. The relationship between the people in her images defines itself through the setting that conversely becomes a psychological extension of the characters. Archipelago raises questions about class, gender, intimacy, and social connectedness in our times. Del Amo draws inspiration from real life by working with sitters who are her friends or family and adds a theatrical dimension through her directorial approach, resulting in a fusion of reality and fiction.

Photographer Yolanda del Amo (b. 1967) lives in New York City. Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major collections.

Author Biography

Yolanda del Amo is a Spanish-born, New York-based artist who works in photography. Her work looks at individuals through a sociological and psychological lens, exploring how we live and connect with ourselves and others, and how we shape the world around us. Del Amo received her Master of Fine Arts, Photography (Honors) from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence in 2004. Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major collections.She is currently Professor of Photography and Digital Media at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
