After Iphigeneia's mother, Clytemnestra, kills her husband in revenge, she in turn is murdered by their son Orestes with his sister Electra's encouragement. Orestes is pursued by the Furies and put on trial, his fate decided by the goddess Athena. Far more than the story of murder and vengeance in the royal house of Atreus, the "Oresteia serves as a dramatic parable of the evolution of justice and civilization that is still powerful after 2,500 years.
The trilogy is presented here in George Thomson's classic translation renowned for its fidelity to the rhythms and multilayered richness of the original Greek.

Author Biography

Aeschylus was born of a noble family near Athens in 525 BC. Aeschylus wrote more than seventy plays, of which seven have survived: The Suppliants, The Persians, Seven Against Thebes, Prometheus Bound, Agamemnon, The Choephori, and The Eumenides. (All are translated for Penguin Classics.) He visited Syracuse more than once at the invitation of Hieron I and he died at Gela in Sicily in 456 BC. Aeschylus was recognized as a classic writer soon after his death, and special privileges were decreed for his plays.

Number of Pages: 176

Dimensions: 0.6 x 8.3 x 5.2 IN

Publication Date: January 20, 2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0811/9867/8237/files/qw9jz3rRVa9781400041923_026f9a2b-2c9d-4f05-92b5-4510833298dc.webp?v=1771520558
https://handfulofbooks.com/products/the-oresteia-agamemnon-choephoroe-eumenides-introduction-by-richard-seaford-hardcover-2
