Hum. and a diploma in Anthropology at Oxford in 1911. From 1911 to 1912 he was designated Oxford Scholar in Papua and was sent by the university to make anthropological studies among the Northern d'Entrecasteaux off the east coast of New Guinea. The results of this first fieldwork were published as \u003cem\u003eThe Northern d'Entrecasteaux\u003c\/em\u003e (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1920). From 1913 to 1916 he served as ethnologist with the Canadian Arctic Expedition.
