Long before South Carolina, the first state to secede from the Union, formally severed her ties with the United States federal government in December 1860, Missouri residents were fighting a bloody border war with Kansas in order to protect their freedoms. When the War Between the States officially reached Missouri, the citizens in this bright western land continued to fight with unmatched tenacity for their families, their homeland, and their beliefs.

Throughout 1861, secession flags were unfurled over the courthouses and other prominent civic buildings, until the end of October when the Missouri Senate and House signed into law their formal act of secession. Examining each flag borne by the Missouri regiments, along with the history of its genesis and use, the author masterfully recounts the history of the Civil War in Missouri. From the massacre at Camp Jackson to the capture of Missouri's flags at the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee, such important events are rendered as context for the flags the brave companies bore. A tribute to the service of the sons of Missouri in defense of their homeland, this study provides an unprecedented analysis of the beautiful banners representing the courage of its citizenry.

Glenn Dedmondt spent much of his life in the United States Marine Corps.
