Bennett-Cookson (Author)

Society is quick to formulate judgments toward those struggling with addiction. However, is addiction a choice? Is mental illness a choice? Everyone's story is different. I can only share mine and how our family was affected. The effects of addiction ripple out, washing over everyone in some manner or form. Like many, I originally thought substance use was a choice, a deficit in one's moral code, a weakness that one should be able to control. Why must tragedy occur to inspire illumination?

Author Biography

I am a Maine native. I obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree from the University of Maine at Augusta. My studies included English, Creative Writing, Education, and Library Studies. I love walking along the beaches when summer is in full swing, listening to the gulls, the surf, and playing children. Maine has beautiful walking trails. Near my home is one my daughter, Sarah loved, as do I. It is known as Hobbit Land. It leads through a meadow, into the woods where the trees grow tall and drop their soft needles below. If you keep walking, the trail leads down to a stone bridge that crosses over a rocky stream. Here I often sit, to soak in the sound of rushing water and the scent of fresh pine which infuses me with renewed energy and hope, refreshing my soul. Before I fall asleep at night, my mind is often working on the next story I want to write. My family have long teased me, calling me a dreamer because in the midst of a conversation I often interrupt them saying, "Oh, that would make a great story!" Often while we are talking, something said recalls a song to my mind and I begin to sing parts of a melody, rather badly actually. Writing has been a lifelong pursuit, allowing me to process my world, explore my imagination and often providing me solace. My specific genres of writing include memoir, creative nonfiction, fiction, prose and poetry.
