She then taught high school, worked for the Pittsburgh \u003ci\u003eLeader\u003c\/i\u003e, and spent a good deal of time traveling.\u003ci\u003eThe Troll Garden \u003c\/i\u003e(1905) was her first volume of short stories, and it was followed by her appointment as associate editor of \u003ci\u003eMcClure's\u003c\/i\u003e \u003ci\u003eMagazine\u003c\/i\u003e. She continued in this position for six years, but resigned in 1912 because she felt that the work for the magazine was interfering with her writing. \u003ci\u003eAlexander's Bridge\u003c\/i\u003e, a short novel set in Boston, was published in the same year.
