He received the B.Sc. degree in Physics from Tohoku University in 1974, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Kyoto University in 1976 and 1985, respectively. From 2001 to 2017, he was a professor at Tokyo University of Technology, where he extended the research on MLD-based nanotechnologies and SOLNET-based optoelectronics for optical interconnects, solar energy conversion systems, and cancer therapy.
