He earned his PhD at Columbia University in 1980 and went on to teach at Harvard University (1981-1988) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (1989-2005), before moving to York in 2005. He has held a number of visiting appointments, among them the Mellon Visiting Professor at the Institute of Advanced Study (2001-2003) in Princeton, NJ. His work has mainly focused on the cultural dimension of Sino-Japanese relations.
