Debertin grew up on a family farm in northwest North Dakota, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Agriculture at North Dakota State University, graduating summa cum laude in 1969. He finished a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics from there as well, completing that degree in 1970. From there he went to Purdue University and finished a PhD in agricultural economics in 1973. He joined the faculty in agricultural economics department at the University of Kentucky in 1974, and spent a 39 year career there in a reasearch and teaching career there, retiring in 2013. Dr. Debertin has written over a hundred academic papers, many dealing with agricultural production and consequences of technological change both in and out of agriculture.
