Estudió Química y Filosofía, así como una maestría en Estudios Orientales. Su fuerte inclinación artística lo llevó a practicar la escritura, el dibujo y la música desde temprana edad. Fue integrante de las bandas de rock La Comuna (1969-1975) y Las Plumas Atómicas (1982-1985). Ha colaborado en varios proyectos con pintores de la talla de Gunther Gerzso, Leonora Carrington, Francisco Toledo y Vicente Rojo. En 1977 fue becario del Centro Mexicano de Escritores, recibió la Beca Fulbright en 1991, la Beca Octavio Paz de Poesía en 2001 y la Beca Guggenheim en 2008. En 2018 fue nombrado Creador Emérito. Sus más de treinta poemarios han sido traducidos a muchos idiomas y se han recopilado en múltiples antologías.
